Shiner First United Methodist Church

Shiner FUMC Food Pantry Turns 5!

Shiner FUMC Food Pantry continues its mission to provide food weekly to Shiner families experiencing financial difficulties. We started in a small room with 1 shelf and a refrigerator and served less than 10 families a week. Currently, we serve between 30-35 families weekly (about 65-85 people). The food pantry ministry is generously supported by our congregation, community organizations, area businesses, and memorial gift donations.

Our partnership with the Food Bank of the Golden Crescent in Victoria allows us to purchase food for approximately 17 cents a pound. They also provide advice for clients needing government assistance programs or medical insurance. The Shiner Rotary Club makes a monthly donation which is used to purchase bread each week. Shiner First Baptist supports the pantry with a $50 donation each month, helping with the cost of food delivery. Several church members bring seasonal garden vegetables and one church member has provided hamburger deer meat for our clients.
Thursday mornings are quite busy from about 8-11 a.m. Several church members provide breakfast for about 15-20 clients each week. Everyone enjoys prayer, food and fellowship together. Breakfast is served at 8:45 and food distribution begins from 9-11 a.m. Volunteers are welcome and needed! Come visit and join the fun.

Here’s how you can be a part of this ministry:

  • Someone to pick up bread at Patek’s Wed. evening and bring it to the pantry on Thurs. morning between 8-8:30 a.m.
  • Someone to carry out groceries for clients (many are elderly or use canes or walkers)
  • Help cook and serve breakfast
  • Visit with clients
  • Substitute volunteers (when regular volunteers are unable to attend)

Many thanks to our church family for your prayers for the Food Pantry ministry and for your generous, ongoing financial support!
